Adrian Warnock has issued a challenge to write about happiness, with this quote by John Piper from the Desiring God website the starting point.
At Desiring God we are blood-earnest about helping people be as happy as possible in God. Because those who are not satisfied in God are not free, but slaves to the futility of seeking their happiness in this world. But those who are satisfied in God are free indeed. They are free to feed the hungry, care for the diseased, comfort the abused, minister to the poor, treat the addicted, speak hope to the despairing and serve on the most difficult mission fields. They are free to lose their lives because they know where to find LIFE.
So for the sake of God's glory and the happiness and freedom of the saints, we are pouring our lives into producing and distributing resources that help them grasp the crucial truth that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him. For in its absence, every aspect of kingdom work eventually suffers
John Piper has had a profound impact on me. And at the heart of that impact is the statement "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.
And that is the key to Christian hedonism, or Christian happiness, being satisfied, absolutely, utterly satisfied with God. The thing is, the happiness of Christian hedonism lies in being satisfied with God--not the good things of life--but God; not health--but God; not the gifts of the Spirit, although they are good--but God; not food, or financial security, or a good marriage, although all those things are good, and may even be gifts from God--but God--Himself.
So to be a Christian hedonist is to be absolutely, utterly God saturated in my thinking and in my meditations and in my prayers and in my songs, and, perhaps even in my sorrows.
To be a Christian is to know that God is better than any thing else life could offer. So I need to bring the gospel to the lost and broken because God is good, and He is satisfying.
So I worship Him, starting now and continuing through eternity, because God is satisfying. And so I obey because I know that--even when obedience is dreadfully hard--that at the end of the day I can say my happiness is in God.
I want a heart that is satisfied with God every day. I want a heart that is happy with God. And I like the word happy, because it cuts through some of the layers that can the word joy a touch hard to grasp. I also like the word happy because it is so solid and real and unmystical.
And I am convinced--I believe with John Piper--that I am not selfish in desiring happiness in God, because my happiness inGod, glorifies Him and strengthens me for a life of ministry.
God is my satisfaction and happiness. Let it be so.
